1. Identify the grammatical functions of the italicised constituents in the following sentences, and then specify how they are syntactically realised:

(i) The doctor uses a bicycle to get to work.

The doctor : Subject (NP functions as subject)

a bicycle : Direct Object (NP functions as DO)

(ii) What to do at this point is a big mystery.

What to do at this point : Subject (To-infinitive clause functions as subject, without subject of their own, introduced by a Wh-word)

(iii) They sold the headmaster faulty computers.

the headmaster : Indirect Object (NP functions as IO)

(iv) We deem her very competent.

* 교수님스타일

her : Direct Object (NP functions as DO)

very competent : Complement (AP functions as complement)

her very competent : Direct Object (Small clause functions as DO)

(v) Gleefully, Henry ran out of the house.

Gleefully : Adjunct (AdvP functions as adjunct)

ran : Predicator (Verb)

(vi) Jake left because he was angry.

Jake : Subject (NP functions as subject)

because he was angry : Adjunct (Finite clause functions as adjunct)

(vii) He left his car in front of the cinema.

left : Predicator (Verb)

in front of the cinema : Adjunct (PP functions as adjunct)

in front of the cinema : Complement (PP functions as complement)

(viii) She doesn't understand what she wants.

She : Subject (NP functions as subject)

what she wants : Direct Object (Finite wh-clause functions as DO)

(ix) I would hate to see you cry.

to see you cry : Direct Object (To-infinitive clause functions as DO)

(x) The policeman made me pay the fine.

The policeman : Subject (NP functions as subject)

* 교수님스타일

me : Direct Object (NP functions as DO)

pay the fine : Complement (VP functions as complement)

me pay the fine : Direct Object (Bare infinitive clause functions as DO)

6. Draw trees for the following sentences.

(i) He claims that he knows the answer.

[S [NP [N He]] [VP [V claims] [SubC [Comp that] [NP [N he]] [VP [V knows] [NP [Det the] [N answer]]]]]]

(ii) They believe that she thinks that he eats meat.

[S [NP [N They]] [VP [V believe] [SubC [Comp that] [NP [N she]] [VP [V thinks] [SubC [Comp that] [NP [N he]] [VP [V eats]  [NP [N meat]]]]]]]]

7. The table at the end of this chapter suggests that Indirect Object cannot be realised as PPs. But what about the PP to Phil in (i) below?

(i) Gerry gave the book to Phil.

(61) We gave the boys the CDs.

(77) The boys were given the CDs by us.

*The CDs were given the boys by us.

*To Phil was given the book by Gerry.
