11.2 Substitution

11.2.1 Substitution of nominal projections : NP and N'

여기서는 치환에 대해서 배우는데요, 가장 먼저 살펴볼 거는 가장 흔한 치환인 NP와 N'의 치환입니다.

(61) [NP My father] admires [NP my mother].

(62) [He] admires [her].

(61)과 (62)에서 알수 있다시피 Pronoun은 NP를 Substitution합니다. NP가 얼마나 복잡한가는 상관없어요. 단지 NP이기만 하면 치환할 수 있습니다.

(73) Mark is a dedicated [N' teacher of language], but Paul is an indifferent [one].

(73)에서는 N'를 Substitution하는 one이 나옵니다.

one이 어떤 N'를 Substitution할지는 문맥에 따라 결정된다고 볼수 있습니다. 대게 one을 사용할때는 그 앞에 대비되는 표현을 등장시키는 경우가 많은데(이 경우는 dedicated와 indifferent겠죠) 이 형용사를 포함하기 바로 전의 N'를 Substitution합니다. 어떤 N'를 Substitution하는지는 문맥을 보고 잘 판단해야겠습니다.

정리: Pronoun은 NP를 Substitution하고, one은 N'를 Substitution한다.

11.2.2 Substitution of verbal projections: VP and V'

(87) Will you pleases leave the room?

  OK, I will - .

(88) Can you play the piano?

  Yes, I can - .

교재에서는 여기서 동사구가 생략되는 현상을 Substitution으로 보았습니다. Φ로 Substitution한다고 본거지요. 그러면 이건 VP를 Substitution한걸까요? 아니면 V'를 Substitution한걸까요?

그에 앞서 다른 문장을 살펴봅시다.

(93) Dawn cleaned the windows diligently, and Sean did so too.

(94) Dawn cleaned the windows diligently, but Sean did so lazily.

여기서 did so가 무엇을 Substitution했는지를 생각해보면, (93)의 did so 는 [cleaned the windows diligently]를 대신한거고, (94)의 did so 는 [cleaned the windows]를 대신한거겠죠.

V'가 2개가 있죠. did so는 V'를 Substitution한다고 볼 수 있습니다. 다만 어떤 V'를 Substitution할지는 역시 one과 마찬가지로 문맥에 따라 달라진다고 하면 될듯합니다. 그럼 다시 처음 문제로 돌아와서

(111) Dawn will clean the windows diligently, but Sean will - lazily.

이 문장을 보면 이제 감이 올거에요. 무엇이 Deletion되었을까요?

[clean the windows]가 deletion되었죠. 즉 Deletion의 단위 역시 V'라는 결론을 얻을 수 있을겁니다.

정리: Deletion이나 do so는 V'를 대상으로 이뤄진다.
